Posted by: Copenhaver, Ellet & Derrico

In 2020, our city of nearly 100,000 residents saw 1,568 vehicle accidents. That’s a lot of car accidents for one city. Each of these crashes had the potential to leave someone seriously injured or even dead.

And that doesn’t even account for property damage, lost time at work, and countless other issues that result from auto accidents.

What are Car Accident Claims Worth?

If you are one of the many people who have been hurt in a car crash in Roanoke, you may have legal options. You deserve compensation if someone else caused your crash. And Virginia law says you can get it.

Common Damages for Car Accidents

First, you will have to be able to show that another party was at fault for the crash. Then, you will have to show that you suffered damages. The following are some common damages in car accidents:

  • Auto damage
  • Medical bills
  • Lost wages
  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional trauma

If someone else was at fault for your accident, you deserve compensation for every damage you have suffered. Your lawyer can help you assign financial value to each of your damages to see what your claim is worth.

What to Do After a Roanoke Car Accident

Car accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. Carefully read the following, so you know what to do if you experience one.

Safety First

Immediately after a car crash, you must ensure that you and your passengers are safe. If possible, move your vehicle to a safe spot away from traffic. If anyone needs emergency medical care, call 911.

Gather Evidence

Once you’ve done that, it’s time to start gathering evidence. This evidence will help you later if you decide to file a car accident claim to recover compensation.

Take Photos

Photograph everything around you — your car, the other car, any injuries, the road where the crash happened, and more.

Gather Witnesses

Get the contact information of anyone who saw the crash. Testimony from these people could be key evidence in your case.

Gather Contact Information from At-Fault Driver

Be sure to get the insurance and contact details of the at-fault driver. But stick to the facts. Get what you need, but don’t discuss the accident at all. And never mention fault or accept any blame for what happened.

Call a Roanoke Car Accident Lawyer

The next step? Call a trusted car crash lawyer. Your lawyer will ensure you make all the right moves to get the full compensation you deserve.
